What’s up Alfa’s, Today I’m back with more tips and tricks. We are going to talk about a highly inquired about topic: how to get bigger more voluminous hair without adding frizz. Let’s dive in.
Step 1: Make sure your hair is oil free.
Use a salon grade shampoo in your hair, Make sure to really massage the shampoo into scalp, then finger comb your hair. Then thoroughly rinse the shampoo from your hair. Below is an example of a shampoo I really love.
Step 2: Always use conditioner.
Add the conditioner to your hair starting with the ends first & working your way up to the scalp. I’m a firm believer in conditioning the ends of your hair and ALSO your scalp area. Your ends don’t need as much conditioner since your scalp will naturally produce it’s own oils. When rinsing your conditioner, rinse well! Be sure to thoroughly rinse any extra shampoo or conditioner in your hair before you style it, if not this will make your hair heavy and much harder to get volume.
Below is one of my current conditioners.
Step 3: Dont skimp on the blowdry.
If you choose to blow dry your hair and want big volume, towel dry your hair as much as you can, add your products, and blow dry your hair upside down until it’s about 90% dry, even if you are picking out curls/coils while blowdrying, doing so upside down will still help with volume in the finished style. Below are 3 blow dryers that I like. In all different price ranges.
Step 4: Don’t skimp on the products.
My favorite products for smooth and voluminous hair are: root lifter, mousse, hairspray, puff powder, some type of blow dry cream, blow out spray, & serum. Apply root lifter, mousse, blow dry cream & blow out spray on towel dried hair, apply hairspray & serum on dry hair. Add blow dry cream (usually less than the size of a pea) all over your head, next spray the blow out spray, then add root lifter to your roots then comb through, add mousse to the ends and midshaft. Blow/rough dry your hair 90% of the way, then save the serum, puff powder, and hair spray for later. Below are some wet products that I love.
Step 5: Make sure your hair is completely dry.
Now it’s time to pull out your round brush or pick. This time blowdry right side up, finish blow dying your hair with a round brush to smooth it out. Using a round brush that is appropriate to the length is crucial when drying, using a brush too big will actually hinder your volume. Blow dry with the dryer facing downward towards your head to help smooth out any frizz added from blowing upside down. Because your hair is already 90% dry, use the dryer at low or medium heat.
Step 6: Use good quality tools & products
If you’re going to spend money for something, spend money on good tools and products for your hair. So many people have damaged hair simply because they don’t have proper tools and products for their hair and are literally frying their hair. These are my favorite flat irons, curling irons, & wands.
Step 7: Don’t be afraid to tease.
Teasing hair can help so much with volume, you don’t have to tease too much like your in the 80s, just a bit right under the part. This works really well for curls/coils too, just be sure not to disturb the curl pattern any where that I will be visible, so tease really close to the root, & not at all where the hair will be parted. After teasing you can now add a bit of puff powder to make sure the tease stays in place. Below is a teasing brush that works really well and fast, as well as a puff powder I like.
Step 8: Don’t mess with the top layer too much.
Don’t mess with the top layer too much it will cause frizz, when touching the top layer make sure to always have a light serum on your hands. If you went for a smooth blow out rub a light serum together in your hands and run your hands along the edges of your hair. If you went natural/curly/ diffused, twirl the curls on your top layer for definition, be sure your hands of a good mount of serum on them. Use a touchable hairspray to set the whole style in place (yes even curly/coily girls can use hair spray if it’s touchable). Below are serums and hairsprays that I love right now.
Step 9: Use products for your specific hair type
If you have dry hair use moisturizing products, if your hair isn’t brittle use repair products, if your hair is curly moisture is key, if your hair is flat straight, keeping a clean scalp in key. Use creams and gels for with a good amount of moisture for curls, and make sure they advertise for your hair type. I love Amika’s Curl Cream!
Step 10: Use satin/silk pillow case/bonnet.
To keep hair somewhat in the same style and to prevent breakage and frizz, satin/silk pillow cases and bonnets are perfect. It’s a necessity for every type of hair. Below are bonnets and pillow cases I recommend.
